Hellenistic Egypt has left us a uniquely extensive and rich body of written documentation (papyri, ostraca and inscriptions) in a variety of languages and scripts that affords us an excellent insight into bureaucratic practices.

This paper explores the question of what means the administration and private individuals had at their disposal for precisely identifying individuals in documents in this highly diverse and dynamically changing ancient
multi-cultural society.
