The oases of the Egyptian Western Desert have yielded meager harvests of Greek inscriptions on stone, even though a much larger number of graffiti and dipinti show that the epigraphic habit was not entirely lacking.
Even by the standard of the oases, Siwa has stood out for its epigraphic poverty: only a few graffiti of the fourth century BC, a statue base of Hadrian from Aghurmi now in the Graeco-Roman Museum in Alexandria, a few sketchy fragments, mainly also from Aghurmi, and a badly damaged dedication of the later Ptolemaic period to several gods.

Recent archaeological work, led by Abdel Aziz el-Demery, the director of antiquities for the region, has begun to show that Siwa was not quite so epigraphically poor as it seemed. El-Demery, Magdy Aly, and I have published several Christian gravestones and a temple dedication inscription from the reign of Antoninus. Another such inscription has long been known (and wildly misrepresented) but not published; the three of us will publish it in a forthcoming volume from a conference in Alexandria held in May, 2023. It contains the dedication on behalf of Trajan of the temple of Isis at el-Maraqi. I shall contextualize it in the wider epigraphic milieu of the oases as well as of Siwa.

The volume VI.4-5 of the Inscriptiones Scythiae minoris Graecae et Latinae (ISM) will gather the inscriptions from the Romanian section of the Lower Danubian frontier, the area covered by the volumes IV and V of the ISM series. The fifth volume appeared in 1980 (Emilia Doruțiu-Boilă), more than fourty years ago, while the fourth, published in 2015, was conceived back in the 1970s by Emilian Popescu. Newly published inscriptions were integrated, of course, but the style and concept were already obsolete at the moment of publication. The new volume will follow the same pattern as ISM VI.2, published by Alexandru Avram, Maria Bărbulescu, and Livia Buzoianu in 2018, with a first part of addenda et corrigenda and a second one presenting the inscriptions found after 1980 or 2014.

Plus spécifiquement, dans le contexte d’une dédicace, un agent, collectif ou individuel,choisit pour nommer le(s) dieu(x)la séquence onomastique divine qui convient le mieux, tout en tenant compte de ses qualités intrinsèques (sexe, condition sociale) et des circonstances spécifiques de l’acte votif (un mariage, la célébration d’une victoire militaire).

A partir d'un élément apparemment anodin (Arator reprend dans son poème le récit de la guérison du boiteux de le Belle Porte; or Paulin de Nole avait comparé ce miracle à un miracle de Saint Félix), on peut reconstruire tout un processus de réécriture de Paulin par Arator qui aboutit à la glorification des chaînes de Pierre. Ce passage ajouté aux Actes par Arator éclaire le processus même de sa réécriture scripturaire, comme fondée en partie sur celle des natalicia de Paulin".
